What was my weekend with Oprah really like? ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL of course!!!

From the moment I arrived at The SAP Center, I was greeted by more than ten thousand like-minded new friends. I was on cloud nine – or maybe even cloud ten. My first stop was “O Town”, the ultimate Oprah-inspired outdoor festival. It was overflowing with the coolest photo opportunities, beauty and pampering stations, musicians, live demonstrations, interactive activities, book signings, meet and greets and “O-so-much-more”. The area was buzzing and without even stepping foot inside, I knew, I was about to embark on the journey of a lifetime!

As I made my way into the arena, the energy was nothing short of electric. Themed in yellow and orange hues, to represent the rising and setting of the sun, the stage was set and designed to perfection. While we anxiously awaited the arrival of the world’s “Soul Sister” and “True OG of Daytime TV”, and her hand-picked “Life Trailblazers”, including Iyanla Vanzant, Elizabeth Gilbert, Rob Bell and Deepak Chopra, the production team kept us (somewhat) distracted, by pumping out an epic playlist that had everyone up on their feet!

Now that you’re captivated and on the edge of your seat, let me rewind the clock, and provide a little more insight into the hours that led up to my arrival at this life-changing event.

My day started like any other, I tossed and turned until 4am and then woke at 7, hysterically crying while having a full-blown anxiety attack (I bet that’s not what you were expecting). At the time, I was two months into my US adventure, which also meant I was two months into my US job hunt. Given my experience and success back home in Australia, I VERY naively thought I was going to land, apply for a few positions and secure a phenomenal role within a couple of weeks, but that is not how the story went – at all – more about that in an upcoming post called ‘My extra-large slice of humble pie’.

It was the middle of the night in Australia, and to be honest, I didn’t want my family to know how bad my anxiety had become. I reached for my phone and called one of my besties. She calmed me down. As soon as I was ready for it, she gave me the kick up the butt I needed. It went a little something like this: “Mel, take a deep breath, pull yourself together!, slap on some red lippy and get excited WOMAN! You’re about to spend an entire weekend with Oprah-freaking-Winfrey!!!” And with that, we both had a giggle, I put ice on my swollen eyes, washed my face, slapped on that red lippy and headed out the door.

Over the next two days, we were taken on a transformational journey. We were reminded that everybody has a calling and that it’s your job in life to pay attention, awaken your full potential, and find the courage to live it. Once, and only once, you’re living the fullest expression of yourself, you need to (in my very best Oprah impersonation)…. “Take your glory and RUNNNN!!!”

My biggest “aha” moment, was during an activity called ‘Awaken to the life YOU want’. During this activity, we had to close our eyes, picture the person we love most in the world, see their face and think about what we wish for them. It will come as no surprise to anyone who’s spent more than 2-minutes with me, that the person I chose was my favorite little brother, Nathan. For those of you who don’t know me, it’s OK, I’ve only got one brother, but he’s still my favorite hahaha.

My wish, Nathan, is for you to be in the same club as your idol, and fellow lefty, Phil Mickelson; traveling the world and winning tournaments along the way. I want you to be internally and infinitely happy and confident in the person you have become, and know that you are, and always will be, loved more than life itself. I look forward to hearing your fans cheering your name as you lift your trophies high in the sky. But most of all, I cannot wait to see your proud smile when my wish becomes your reality, and you’re finally living the life you’ve always dreamed of.

What I didn’t realize, is that what you want for your most beloved, is also what you want for yourself.

So tell me… Who would you choose and what would you wish for them?
